Every morning on the weekend, Durga Chew-Bose or her husband prepares challah french toast for their son. The small number of ingredients (four) and quick cooking and prep time leaves the family with more time to spend with one another. “[Fran] eats..while I read him books.” she tells Family Style.

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • Milk
  • 1 slice of challah
  • Butter
  • Local maple syrup
  • Cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, beat an egg with milk (add cinnamon if you want).
  2. Soak challah slice in egg milk mixture (flip sides!).
  3. Melt butter in a skillet.
  4. Add soaked challah.
  5. Cook until both sides are golden brown or even a little too browned.
  6. Cut into small pieces.
  7. Serve with maple syrup from a local farm.
