A pigeon, a pig, and a bottle of Heinz Tomato Ketchup. What do all three have in common? Each is but one of the many characters that Marc Jacobs has dressed up as over the years to host his bygone holiday affair. Though the fashion designer is remembered on the runway for his avant-garde collections, it was through this annual event that he proved his commitment to setting the scene—and then stealing the show. There was the 2006 Carnival in Venice-themed fête at New York’s Gotham Hall in which Jacobs was forced was forced to arrive to the party via truck flatbed due to the sheer scale of his feathered costume. Or the Arabian Nights party the designer joined the likes of Bill Cunningham and Mickey Boardman while dressed as a “Camel Toe.” Years before that, he appeared as a Polar Bear for a White and Silver moment. Of the near 20-year-run, each of Marc Jacobs’ holiday party was more over-the-top than its predecessor. Stumbling upon these images of the designer clad in costume at these encounters now, I thought surely that the events were Halloween related. (They were not.) Of course, only Marc could gather likes of Sofia Coppola, André Leon Talley, Naomi Campbell, and Debbie Harry during a time when every one else goes off the grid. Though the last “official” party that Jacobs’ and his former business partner Robert Duffy threw was in 2008, they continue to live on in our hearts—and online, where I revisit each every day. Have an affair that’s stayed within your heart? I’d love to hear from you. Tag me.
